Welcome to Cambridgeshire Coastal Noble, a heavily guarded luxury residential area for the new Chinese upper middle class. The concept of Cambridgeshire reveals a lot about the modern, westernized China. This is like a small village on its own where the children attend international schools and security guards drive the inhabitants around in fancy cars. Cambridgeshire is a community that has been created with the ideal everyday life in mind, offering its inhabitants with everything from a “trendy and prestigious clubhouse” to a “continental shopping paradise”. However, as a result of the Chinese housing bubble, it also displays a remarkable absence of people. The surprising mix of classical Chinese elements and western-style interiors create a bizarre feeling as the architecture already has started to deteriorate before anyone has moved in. Is it a flawed theatre stage or is it someone’s future living room?
